On 16th May, Forte will open a call for one-year planning grants in mental health research. The call is part of Forte’s research programme on mental health. A total of SEK 11 million is allocated for this purpose.

To ensure that research informs policy and practice effectively, collaboration between researchers and the wider community is important. For this reason, Forte offers a specific grant type called planning grants, which span one year and are designed to facilitate researchers in preparing and planning for a future research project.

Focus of the call

The purpose of this planning grant is to facilitate collaboration between researchers and organizations working in mental health, actively engaging with individuals in their day-to-day operations. The collaboration should primarily adopt a problem-solving approach.

The planning grant can be utilized for various activities aimed at supporting a future application for project funding. During the grant period, researchers can foster collaborations with experts across diverse research disciplines, practitioners, and users. This collaborative effort is instrumental in not only strengthening the research but also in testing its feasibility through pilot studies. Hence, the activities funded by the planning grant do not necessarily need to strictly adhere to research. Read more about collaboration on Fortes website.

The planned research should fall within one of the following areas:

  • Research on the causes, mechanisms, and development of mental health and ill-health.

  • Research on promotion, prevention, and early interventions for mental health.

  • Research on the organisation and structure of the welfare system related to mental health.

  • Practice-oriented research on effective interventions, methods, and treatment for mental ill-health and psychiatric disorders.

Forte particularly encourages research on the methods and approaches of civil society, as well as research on the enabling conditions and circumstances for civil society to work with mental healthThe call includes research on all aspects of mental health – ranging from mental well-being to psychological problems to psychiatric disorders, at both individual and societal levels. There are no limitations regarding age groups.  Forte also welcomes projects that include support for family caregivers.

Research into mental health is a broad field with many important questions to address. To achieve a robust, equitable, and gender-neutral mental health across the population, Forte has been running a national research programme in this area since 2021. The programme is part of the Swedish Government’s initiative to promote mental well-being and prevent and treat mental ill-health through research and innovation. As per the Government’s instructions, the programme will be operated according to a strategic research agenda that outlines the programme’s vision, goals, and strategies. The agenda also includes the prioritised research areas in which the programme will support research. Please see links below to read more.
